Lionel Messi, New Fashion Icon?
Apparently Lionel Messi has not only shocked the world by winning his fourth consecutive Golden Ball, but also the fashion industry and its critics.
On Monday worldwide soccer star went to FIFA’s Ballon d’Or awards gala with a suit made by Dolce & Gabbana. His jacket was highlighted by tiny white dots over black silk, a satin lapel and a bow tie that came with the same pattern.
Faina Dominguez, director of the Dolce & Gabbana store in Madrid, confirmed that the striker has a direct relationship with the designers and he lets them advise him. The tuxedo is a Sicilia model, handmade creation, with geometrical cut on the jacket, white dots, characteristic of the brand, and skinny jeans. The Italian firm has labeled Messi as the representative of the “modern, sexy and daring man.”
Meanwhile, Brazilian sports commentators mixed their usual functions with fashion critic, also unanimously, came together to define the suit as “the only goal against Messi” while Correio Braziliense titled the Argentine as “a genius with the ball “, but “far from satisfactory” when it comes to fashion.
On the other hand, social networks highlighted the similarity between Messi’s suit with one that wore years ago his compatriot Diego Armando Maradona, in Seville (Spain), in the early nineties. Different media questioned whether the suit Messi chose was a coincidence or a tribute to the controversial former soccer player and current technical director.
