NEC claims that they have not received the request for a referendum yet
Paul Salazar, vice president of the National Electoral Council (NEC), said that the agency has not received any request from the government to carry out a referendum during the elections of 2014, after the announcement of President Rafael Correa on voting for the possibility to perform marriages between persons of the same sex in the country.
“Officially we do not have anything in papers; it has not officially been required,” said Salazar, who also explained that despite not even being notified, the NEC is prepared in case they receive the request.
After having reiterated his rejection on gay marriage, Correa again raised the possibility of a popular referendum within the next sectional elections, so the people can decide if they agree with marriages between two people of the same sex.
