New varieties of potatoes for Carchi crops

The most important reason for Carchi to host the 7th Ecuadorian Congress of Potatoes is because it is the first potato-producing province of the country.
According to data from the Provincial Government, this province contributes with the 35% of the production nationwide. In addition, it is in first place by the quantity of production per hectare: the average of Ecuador is of 13.7 tons per hectare, whereas Carchi produces 21 tons.
Andrés Chulde, a technician of the Provincial Government, says that the main potato variety (90% of production) in the province is the “papa chola,” consumed in 80% of the national territory. However, there are other types of varieties the authorities seek to introduce in the province, such as “egg yolk” and “the median.” The plan of the authorities is to diversify the production of this tuber.
