Rio de Janeiro is Gradually Cleaning the Favelas
Around 3,000 police and military, along with the government of Rio de Janeiro conducted an operation called “Strike for Peace” in the favela Rocinha (the biggest slum in the country) and the neighboring communities as Vigidal and Chacara do Ceu, becoming one of the harder blows against drug trafficking.
Colonel Alberto Pinheiro, chief of the Militarized Police said: “We are pleased to report that Rocinha, Vidigal and Chacara do Ceu are already under our control.”
The operation ended with the domain of organized crime in the slums and the network groups like Friends of the Friends gang (ADA in spanish), led by Antonio Bonfim Lopes (aka Nem), captured last Thursday.
Security forces remain in the community until it is installed Pacification Police Unit (UPP).
