Yemen in turmoil

The troubled Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh arrived in Saudi Arabia early on Wednesday of November 23, 2011. Saleh would sign a power transfer plan that would make him step down from charge.

The announcement remained vague regarding Saleh’s exact plans, stating that he would “attend” the signing of the so-called GCC Initiative (Gulf Cooperation Council). The document would grant Saleh immunity from prosecution in exchange for his resignation.

For several months the impoverished nation has been paralyzed due to its political turmoil. However the political and military defections have seriously weakened the central government’s hold over much of the country. (AV)
