Scientists create a bionic eye which is activated by light
Posted On 14 May 2012
Scientists from Stanford University in California invented a retinal implant that is powered only by light.
The device uses a special pair of glasses to beam near infrared light into the eye. The implant stimulates the nerves sending information to help a patient to see.
“Such a fully integrated wireless implant promises the restoration of useful vision to patients blinded by degenerative retinal diseases.”
Surgical procedure to implant it is easier than other retinal prosthesis; the implant has not been tested in people, but has been shown to work in rats. (PLS)
