The President of Chile, Sebastian Pinera, issued comments regarding the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, “Benedict XVI’s resignation is an act of courage and of consequence. Pope Benedict XVI is the Vicar of Christ on earth and has the responsibility to lead the Church. And for that, no doubt, is required to be in total and complete control of all his faculties.”
The Chilean president added, “If he feels that his age or his health do not qualify him to lead and takes the decision to resign, is an act of courage and therefore is something that I appreciate and value.”
Recall that the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican will take effect on February 28, the day the religious office become vacant, and where the council of cardinals begin to evaluate who will be the new pontiff.
