Selection eliminates t-shirt number 11 in honor of Chucho Benitez

The Ecuadorian Soccer Federation (FEF, for its Spanish acronym) announced today that the Ecuadorian team will archive the t-shirt number 11 as a way of paying tribute to the international striker, Christian ‘chucho’ Benítez, who died last Monday in Qatar due to a cardiac arrest.

Benitez wore that number during the 58 matches played with the tricolor, therefore, the President of the FEF, Luis Chiriboga, decided that after his death no player of the national team will be an 11, said the spokesman of the entity, Víctor Mestanza.

“That shirt will not be used; that shirt will be the tribute that will be paid to ‘Chucho’. They will play with another number but not with the 11 ” said Mestanza.

The remains of Benitez, who had been transferred a few weeks ago by the America of Mexico to the Club form Qatar Al – Jaish, arrived today to the 08:30 to the outside of the Rumiñahui General Coliseum, where hundreds of fans were waiting for him.
