The Swedish Government has summoned the Ambassador of Ecuador in Stockholm to convey the rejection of the statements of Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño on granting asylum for Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange.
Assange is wanted by the authorities of Sweden on charges of rape and sexual assault of two Swedish women.
The foreign minister of Sweden, Carl Bildt, harshly criticized the statements of Patiño, “our strong legal and constitutional system guarantee rights to all. We firmly reject any allegation that suggests otherwise. ”
Caterina Axelsson, spokesman for the Swedish Foreign Ministry, said her country “strongly objects” Patiño’s allegations about Sweden’s judicial system and “regrets” that the decision of Ecuador “prevents” the actions of the Swedish justice.
Assange has admitted that during his stay in the Scandinavian country, he had sex with several women, but has said that the sex relations were mutual. (MZ)
