Tepco Discovers Crack in Fukushima Reactor 2

Posted On 02 Apr 2011

The technicians of the Tepco company discovered a crack in the reactor #2 were highly doses of radiated water is being leaked into the ocean. The filtration is of 1,000 millisieverts per hour, which is enough to increase the risk of cancer to any person exposed for a long-term. Tepco already announced that they will proceed immediately to seal the crack with cement to stop the filtration.

Experts from the French nuclear company Areva, supplier of nuclear fuel to Fukushima, are helping the Japanese technicians to find a solution for disposing of the radiated water that has reached the ocean. This filtration has also reached 15 meters into the underground of one of the six reactors that Tepco has. Recently a board of Japanese and North American nuclear experts along with American militaries has been created to face the crisis.

Naoto Kan, the Japanese prime minister visited for the first time the most affected population. Kan stated that those that were forced to evacuate will remain away for a long time. Meanwhile thousands of Japanese and American militaries began an intensive rescue operation of 15,540 people that remain missing, so far 32 corpses have been discovered. The natural disaster that struck Japan on March 11 left 11,800 casualties.
