The 70% of Ecuadorians chose turkey for Christmas dinner
Today many Ecuadorian families decided to buy the traditional turkey for tonight’s dinner. Despite the high price to arrange a Christmas dinner with turkey, which usually demands a cost over $ 100, the turkey is still the main choice for tonight.
The Advance Consultancy firm surveyed 400 people from Guayaquil and Quito, which revealed that 70.83% planned to eat that dish at Christmas, while the remaining 30% chose alternatives between chicken and pork. The data collected by that company revealed that families spend an average of $ 116.05. However the people of Guayaquil tend to spend a little more on the Christmas menu than Quito’s inhabitants.
“Eating turkey is almost a tradition,” stated Maruja Reyes, who tried to lower her costs by buying nuts and raisins in the centre of Guayaquil market. According to the survey of Advance Consulting, not all people directly finance the purchase of turkey, 30% of people get the bird as a gift, while 79% buys it.
Finally, an executive at Corporación Favorita, said that supermarkets have various formats and the most bought size of turkey at this time has been ranging between 5 and 7 kg. The preference for the animal’s weight ranges from 7 to 9 kg.
Jose Orellana, CONAVE CEO, said sales of domestic turkey this year “could diminish due to the negative consequences this entails for local producers and members of the food network.”
