The ambassador of Ecuador in Spain, Cristóbal Roldán, today contextualized the statements made on the legal situation of former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa as part of a meeting with Ibero-American journalists in Madrid.
In a statement sent to Efe Roldan said that regarding the possibility that Correa ask for refuge in Spain “I do not think it is because the former president lives in Belgium and is married to a Belgian citizen.”
When asked again on the same subject, the Ecuadorian ambassador added: “I would suggest that you return to the country, that you show your face, that you submit to the judges to show that you are a good man.”
He also stated that he would be insured like all judicial processes currently in Ecuador.
“There is absolute transparency and there the former president can dignify his figure, if innocent; he must go there to maintain as we believe, he is still a good man, “he said.
Roldán added literally: “I long to think that he has no criminal responsibility.”
The diplomat stressed that since May 24, 2017 Justice once again prevailed in Ecuador, emphasizing that judges are absolutely independent.
“The Government cannot even suggest in the decisions that fall within the jurisdiction of the judiciary,” he said. (I)
