The crisis and the traffic lights hit dairy products
Nutritional traffic lights that alert the content of sugar, fat and salt in foodstuffs led consumers to find more ‘light’ and healthy products. One of the segments affected by the decision of consumers is milk and its derivatives, which last year recorded a drop in sales belonged to the 15%.
This downturn was given by two factors: the main one was the contraction of the economy, but the use of the nutritional traffic light, ordered by the Ministry of Health, also caused an impact to a lesser extent. This was stated by Rafael Vizcarra, president of the Dairy Industry Center.
In this context, the Ministry of Industry announced it will eliminate the traffic light for dairy products as a measure to promote this industry and meet the request of farmers who demand solutions to the crisis in the sector. The holder of this State portfolio, Eduardo Egas, said in mid-March there is already an agreement between government bodies to eliminate the traffic lights.
