The Extra newspaper apologizes for ‘ Sexy Monday’
Posted On 02 Apr 2014
The Superintendent of Information and Communication (Supercom) sanctioned for the second time the Extra newspaper and obliges it to publish a public apology in its printed and digital edition by making a “sexist and stereotyped” treatment of the figure of the woman. Specifically by a complaint by Assemblywoman Soledad Buendía (País), who questioned the segment of the edition of August 26, 2013 ‘Sexy Monday´.In that publication photographs of the model Claudia Hurtado are displayed, along with several legends as `Tremendous filly!´. According to the letter signed by the Superintendent Ochoa, Extra violated the article 62 of the law of communication. This rule indicates that “it is prohibited the dissemination through any means of social communication of discriminatory content that aims or result undermine or cancel the recognition, enjoyment or exercise of the rights recognized in the Constitution and in international instruments”.
Juan Manuel Yépez, General Editor, announced that the apology is broadcasted today. The text prompts excuses to Hurtado and women that have felt attacked by the publication. But he criticized the resolution of Ochoa. Among other reasons, because the model Hurtado, herself, said that she does not feel represented in the complaint and that she gave her consent for the photos.
