The Prosecutor’s Office requests house arrest for Danilo Carrera for the Encuentro Case
The State Attorney General’s Office has requested, this Friday, November 24, that the judge in the case issue a preventive house arrest order against the businessman Danilo Carrera Drouet, brother-in-law of former president Guillermo Lasso, for the Encuentro Case, in which They investigate alleged collections of bribes from public officials.
Danilo Carrera has not been a public official. The Prosecutor’s request may be accepted or denied by the judge.
The Prosecutor’s Office has also requested the preventive detention of Hernán Luque, former manager of the Public Companies Coordinating Company; Messrs. Antonio Icaza, Leonardo Cortázar and others mentioned in the Encuentro Case. In total, eight people.
Carrera has been accused based on audio of an alleged telephone conversation between Luque and a friend of Carrera, named Rubén Cherres, in which a voice identified as Cherres tells his interlocutor that a certain “Danilo” has requested for himself the sum of thirty thousand dollars.
The audio was broadcast by the La Posta site, and served for the majority of the National Assembly, led by Correism, to call for impeachment and request the dismissal of President Guillermo Lasso.
Cherres, who went into hiding after it was revealed that the Prosecutor’s Office had ordered his monitoring as a suspect of being linked to drug trafficking, was murdered last March and his body was found in Santa Elena.
In the testimonies prior to the hearing to formulate charges, the La Posta journalist, Ándersson Boscán, has admitted that the original of the recording in which this “Danilo” is mentioned was destroyed and that said evidence no longer exists.
The Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that its request is based on the fact that Carrera constantly travels outside the country due to his activities as president of the Ecuadorian Tennis Federation (FET). He also asked for his bank accounts to be frozen and a possible fine for damages caused.
Carrera has described himself, in a video broadcast on social networks last October, as a victim of an “incessant smear campaign” with which he wants to politically harm his brother-in-law’s government.
