The building designed by Czech architect Karl Kohn is a benchmark of modernism in Ecuador. It maintains an imposing appearance despite the years of abandonment. A large central vault marks the wide space of the hall, which incorporated the first electric stairs of the country back then in 1954. Light floods the rooms through the surrounding trellis works.
In the five floors of the building located in downtown Guayaquil, which first housed the Banco de Descuento and then the Superintendency of Companies, will accomodate the new Library of the Arts, a restoration project of the Ministry of Culture that will be incorporated to the University of the Arts (UArtes).
