Tibán rejects state of exception measure imposed by the government
Assemblywoman for Packakutik Lourdes Tiban, on behalf of the Cotopaxi province, expressed her rejection of the state of emergency declared by the Central Government. The first ashes of the Cotopaxi volcano have served the regime to “outrage and threaten,” and go up against human rights of the Saraguro people, she said in an interview with Ecuavisa.
With the decree in question, Tiban said this is “the only exit of this cowardly government, that doesn´t know how to give a political solution to the indigenous movement, the social organizations and the general strike.” According to Tiban, with the state of emergency they put at their disposal the security forces to end the indigenous uprising and put an end to the strike.
“The state of emergency is not going to save the government from all the neoliberal policies it is implementing. We have said that the President should finish his presidential term for which he was elected, but likewise, we have requested them to meet the demands of the convening sectors of the national strike, starting from the withdrawal of the constitutional amendments.
On violence in the protests, she referred: “the government is the one that infiltrated people in our mobilization in order to label the indigenous people as violent, and with all the media under their control, they have the nerve to say they do not have any photo of the insult of Salvador Quishpe, that there is no video about (the arrest) Carlos Perez, there is no video about journalist Manuela Picq, even the police report -because they have the power- said that the police saved the journalist from an assault, when we all know that Picq, partner of Carlos Perez, was attacked by the National Police, was outraged, they stole her camera, her laptop.”
