Uruguayan bishops support the annulment of the abortion law

Posted On 06 May 2013

According to sources of the Uruguayan Church, several bishops of this country have decided that they will support the referendum which will be held on the next June 23 that will open the process  to abolish  the law that decriminalized abortion, which was approved by the  Parliament at the end of 2012.

The Electoral Court set last Friday the date for the opening of the process leading to a referendum, after validating the 52.343 signatures necessary to initiate it.

“Human rights and the right to life cannot be subject to the  circumstantial majorities of an electoral or legislative body “, indicated the bishops in a statement, which prompted the citizens to vote on June 23 in order to enable the call for the referendum on the law that now allows the “crime of abortion”.

In the election announcement, called ‘Acto de adhesion’, the inhabitants that support this motion will go to the polls to decide if  they want a referendum, that  will be carried out only in the event that about 654.000 people vote in favor.
