Emelec is the leading team of the Ecuadorian championship

With a last minute win thanks to the striker Angel Mena, Emelec won 1-0 over Liga de Loja and maintains the lead of the Ecuadorian soccer championship after obtaining their tenth victory of the season last Sunday.

The millionaires, who wasted several chances to take the lead and did not show all their offensive level, ended up with nine players after defenders Gabriel Achilier and Cristian Nasuti received a direct expulsion. Yesterday afternoon the team traveled to Rio de Janeiro where they’ll face the Brazilian team Fluminense on Wednesday for the knockout round of the Copa Libertadores. In the first run, the millionaires won 2-1.

In the other matches played yesterday, El Nacional defeated Independiente 3-0. The day began on Friday with the triumph of Cuenca 2-0, as local, over Barcelona, and on Saturday Deportivo Quito defeated Liga de Quito with a final score of 3-1. On Saturday Quevedo beat Manta 3-0, and the Catolica 3-1 against Macara.

After already playing 14 dates Emelec is the absolute pointer with 32 points and a game in hand, followed by Catolica and Quito with 27 and Liga de Quito with 24. Barcelona is in sixth place with 18 points and far from the possibility of being first and qualify to the championship finale.
