Yoani Sanchez Was Detained in Bayamo

The dissident Cuban blogger, Yoani Sanchez, 37, and her husband Reinaldo Escobar, were arrested this Friday as the travelled to the city of Bayamo, where they planned to attend the trial of the Spanish activist, Angel Carromero, who is being accused of negligent homicide for the death of two government opponents, including prominent dissident Oswaldo Payá.

The Cuban government has not confirmed the arrests, it rarely does in this cases. Sanchez was travelling to Bayamo to lend her full support to Carromero, who faces a 10-year-sentence. Yoani Sanchez has become the most renowned Cuban dissident through her blog and even won international awards, but Cuba has not let her leave to collect them. AV
