Rio de Janeiro Police Attacked Favela Drug Dealers
Last Sunday Rio de Janeiro officers invaded the headquarters of the drug dealers on the favelas. The operation was supported with helicopters, armoured vehicles and military backup.
The elite police units entered the Complexo do Alemao with heavy crossfire; helicopters flew low to backup the land troops while hundreds of gangs’ members defended their positions. The agents expected more resistance and soon the encounter ended after defeating several gang bangers.
After a week of violence on which over 35 people lost their lives, most of them were drug dealers and criminals, more than 100 vehicles were burned too. The military police established a headquarters on the Complexo do Alemao as symbol of domain and protection against crime. This is a historic moment regarding the drug dealers since for more than 20 years. The Alemao sector was under control of Comando Vermelho, the biggest and oldest faction of drug dealers in Rio de Janeiro.
