ICC Orders Arrest of Gaddafi, Son, and Brother in Law

Posted On 27 Jun 2011
The judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered today the arrest of libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, his second son, Saif al Islam, and his brother in law Abdullah al Senusi, who is also head of military intelligence regime.

The arrest of the three Libyan leaders is “necessary,” among other things, “to prevent crimes to continue happening,” said the judge who presides the room, Sanji Mmasenono. “There is sufficient basis” to believe that Gaddafi and his son committed murder and persecution, understood as crimes against humanity, “especially in Tripoli, Benghazi and Misrata” between “February 15th, 2011 and at least February 28th 2011,” added Mmasenono.

The arrest warrant issued today does not mean that Gaddafi and his son and his brother are guilty, that should be clarified during the arrest judgement. The dettention order could interfere with governments that agreed a possible Gaddafi exile to another country to end the civil conflict in Libya. (MS)
