Robots Would Watch Convicts in South Korea

In March a contingency of robots would join the guards of a prison in the western city of Pohang. The robots will supervise convicts that show an irregular conduct, hence they would make the human guards job easier.

The robots created by Asian Forum for Corrections have a height of 1’5 meters. The surveillance machines move themselves with wheels, and are equipped with cameras and other sensors that would allow them to detect any abnormal conducts of inmates such as fights and suicide attempts.

Professor Lee Baik-Chu of the Kyonggi University added that the robots would send signals to the human guards if they detect any problem. The maintenance of these cybernetic guards would be of $857,000. (AV)
