Indian industry uses trial court Chevron International

Through the intervention of international courts, the Ecuadorian indigenous communities are demanding Chevron to pay compensation to the millionaire a local appeals chamber confirmed recently in the middle of a lawsuit against the oil company for environmental pollution.

Sucumbíos Provincial Court upheld a ruling last year that ordered Chevron to pay about $ 8,646 million to remedy environmental and health damages and payment of $ 860 million to the affected indigenous communities.

Pablo Fajardo, lawyer for plaintiffs announced that communities initiate appropriate enforcement actions on different continents and countries where Chevron has assets.

“(…) We will not waver or forgive a penny to Chevron for the crime (…) we still have several years of work still to make the punishment fit the crime, environmental, social and cultural rights by Chevron.”

The oil was not immediately available to comment on any orders in the Ecuadorian justice system. Chevron has said it will continue to pursue options through legal proceedings outside of Ecuador, believing that the justice system of the Andean country is marred by corruption.
