Activists protest in Canada by oil explotation in Ecuador

Posted On 17 Apr 2013

Tomorrow, several activists and environmental groups will protest in Calgary (Canada) against the dialogues that  the representatives of the Ecuadorian Government  will have with oil companies for the exploitation of oil resources in the Amazon region of the country, including Talisman, which has been the subject of protests  for its activities in Peru.

Adam Zuckerman, spokesman of Amazon Watch, an organization that is responsible for the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples and organized the protest, exposed last Tuesday that Aboriginal communities living in the area are opposed to the entry of oil companies in its territory.

“Indigenous groups have indicated that if the Ecuadorian Government attempts to drill in their territory, are willing to do whatever it takes to prevent it,” said Zuckerman.

Despite the fact that none of the Ecuadorian indigenous leaders will go to Calgary, Amazon Watch made public an  “open letter from the Confederation of nationalities  of indigenous people of the Ecuadorian Amazon (Confeniae) to public and private enterprises interested in participating in the South-East round”.

“We demand now, to public and private oil companies in the world to not participate in a bidding process that systematically violent rights of seven indigenous nationalities by imposing an oil project in their ancestral lands,” states the letter.
