IACHR gives an ample space to Ecuador in their report
The Inter-American Commission of human rights (IACHR) yesterday presented before the Commission of Legal Affairs and politicians of the Organization of American States (OAS) their annual report of 2012.
The document includes the Special Rapporteur for freedom of expression, in which a large chapter is devoted to Ecuador; there a re references to the murder of photo-journalist Byron Baldeon; legal reforms adopted as to the code of democracy in relation to the work of the media during the campaign; laws in discussion, like the communication’s law, the telecommunications and postal services.
Likewise, is mentioned the project of the Integral Criminal Code, which seeks to include crimes such as femicide, and to keep others like libel against public officials, establishing penalties of up to three years in prison.
The report lists the arrests of citizens that expressed comments against President Rafael Correa, including the lawsuits against journalists Juan Carlos Calderón and Christian Zurita; El Universo, their executives and the former editor of Opinion; the journalist Yaco Martinez; the politician Fernando Balda, court orders against newspaper La Hora, and threats of lawsuits to El Comercio newspaper.
