Judgment in Court of the United States is celebrated by homosexuals

The celebrations spread to New York, where politicians and activists celebrated the decision, once the United States Supreme Court yesterday, granted a significant victory to advocate gay rights, since acknowledged that newlywed gays (men or women)  can enjoy federal benefits and pave the way for same-sex marriage to be approved in California.

Despite this, the Court did not provide a landmark ruling to endorse the fundamental right of gays to marry.

Both cases concern the constitutionality of a federal law that restricts benefits to persons of the same sex who are married, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and a law of the State of California enacted in 2008, called proposition 8, which bans gay marriage.

US President Barack Obama, asked the Attorney general, Eric Holder, to revise the relevant federal laws to ensure the implementation of the judgement.

The President also joined the celebration, and showed his approval via his Twitter account “decision today (yesterday) on DOMA is a historic step forward in favor of marriage equality. Love is love.”

Despite the progress, the issue of same-sex marriage remains controversial and causes divisions among the country’s 50 States. Currently, 12 of them recognize this, more than 30 prohibit it and others have intermediate laws.
