Alleged police officer involved in 30S could be released
Corporal Johnny C., who was arrested 41 days ago for his alleged involvement in the police riot of September 30 of 2010, arrived today to the Provincial Court to demonstrate that, in fact, the day of the riot, he was hospitalized after suffering an accident and to ask for the dismissal of his detention warrant.
The police officer is being prosecuted for the attempted murder of the president, Rafael Correa, but his lawyers want freedom for his client because there is an expert report which states that the detainee, who appears in the video (promoted by the government to arrest those responsible) are not the same person.
However, prosecutor Gustavo Benitez explained that the day of the arrest, a first report was published in which they did find similarities. That is why he will ask for a third expert report. But to avoid an injustice, the prosecutor ordered another hearing to revoke the detention of Jhonny C. so he can defend himself enjoying freedom while the process carries on.
Either from freedom protection, on which the President of the Court will decide in the upcoming days, or from the hearing for the revocation of the detention order to be carried out in two weeks, the person involved could be released.
