Prime Minister of Spain, the conservative Mariano Rajoy, said this Thursday before the parliament of his country that he will not resign over the suspicions of corruption against him and his party, which he denied.

“Some participants have demanded my resignation as prime minister of Spain. I’ll answer it in a very clear and straightforward way: no,” said Rajoy.

“I will not resign or call for elections, it is very clear,” he said causing a loud applause from where the conservative Spanish Congress of Deputies was.

After the start of parliamentary debate, nearly five hours, Rajoy admitted making the mistake “in maintaining confidence in someone that we now know did not deserve” in reference to the former treasurer of Popular Party (PP), Luis Barcenes, who worked for them since 1999 to 2009, and now faces charges of corruption.

Rajoy ended by saying “I will not plead guilty because I’m not (…) I have no record that my party was financed illegally,” he added.
