Homosexual couple looking to get married in Quito

Posted On 06 Aug 2013

Gabriela Correa and Pamela Troya arrived yesterday to the Civil Registry of the center of Quito to try to get married. The authorities of the Marriage Chamber received the respective documentation to verify if the procedure was appropriate; the procedure will last four days and on Friday they must return to obtain a response.

They have been living together for years, and want to legalize their union and will not expect a positive response from the Civil Registry but they will present an action of protection before a judge, and in the second instance, at the Constitutional Court.

Their lawyer, Ramiro García, explained that the couple has the same rights as heterosexuals to marry, and added that a reform of the Constitution is not necessary because it ensures equality for all persons and establishes that no one may be discriminated  for gender identity.

In Latin America the equal marriage is permitted in countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay, where yesterday two men, one with a terminal cancer, became the first marriage between same sex couples registered in Uruguay, with a ceremony at a Montevideo hospital.
