MPD Alderman was sentenced for crimes against the nation

Rosaura Bastidas, Councillor of the Canton La Concordia, also president of the National Union of Teachers of the Canton, was found guilty of the crime of terrorism against public officials by the First Criminal Court of Esmeraldas.

Bastidas faces a sentence of 3 to 6 years behind bars.

Bastidas, along with six other people, was charged with terrorism after the incidents in La Concordia, on July 19, 2010, when the regime leader, Rafael Correa, announced that there would be a consult to decide to what province the Canton wants to belong.

On that occasion, a tear gas bomb was used on the exterior of the premises where Correa gave his speech. The accused of dropping the bomb was the current mayor of La Concordia, Walter Ocampo, who was not present at the hearing and subsequently testified through a videoconference.

Following this fact the accused Juan Alcivar, employee of newspaper La Hora from Esmeraldas, was found innocent, like five other young men who were released for lack of evidence.

On May 31, 2013, La Concordia became part of the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, following the approval of the National Assembly in accordance with the popular pronouncement made in February 5, 2012, its citizens decided with 64,92% where to belong.
