This Sunday died Mexican poet Jose Emilio Pacheco in Mexico City. The writer, 74, was hospitalized on Saturday afternoon. His daughter Laura Emilia Pacheco said that “he died  quietly and peacefully.” She was commissioned to confirm the news.

Poet, novelist, essayist and translator, he was a simple man. The public image of Pacheco (Mexico City 1939-2014) was of a poet without pretensions and the writing was his being.

His genre was poetry, or as Carlos Monsivais once wrote with irony: “Jose Emilio Pacheco, poet, writer, cultural journalist, translator, anthologist, occasional playwright, he is mostly a poet.”

Pacheco studied law and philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He was a translator of English writers (Tennessee Williams, TS Eliot …) associate press, essayist (The Right to Read, 1984), among others.
