The Archbishop of Guayaquil, Monsignor Antonio Arregui, responded to the criticisms made by the Legal Secretary of the Presidency, Alexis Mera today.

“The church and I personally try not to be enemies of this government, or anyone, we respect the authority, but we certainly have the obligation to exercise our right to give our opinion as citizens and as ministers of God, trying to illuminate with the Gospel the realities of our social, economic and political life. I think specifically about the underlying issue that gave rise to this statement, it is time to end in our legislation with the arrogance of the antireligious sectarianism that is not commiserated with the freedoms that the Constitution grants to us.”
