Ecuador analyzes an international mediation

Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa clarified that, in the case of Julian Assange, his situation will not affect his status as a protected person. An international mediation is the option for the government of the United Kingdom and the citizen Julian Assange to reach an agreement.
This was confirmed by the Foreign Minister of Ecuador, María Fernanda Espinosa. In this sense, the country, through the Ministry of International Relations, suggested this possibility to London, as would be the case in other cases. This was indicated by Espinosa in an interview in a media outlet. In this space he also confirmed that the creator of WikiLeaks signed a legal commitment that was notarized in which he made a vow of silence on political issues, both from Ecuador and from other countries. Faced with this, Paola Vintimilla, assembly member of the Social Christian Party and member of the International Relations Commission, informed that they do not rule out a call to Minister Espinosa to appear before the legislative table and before the plenary session of the National Assembly.
“As long as we do not have that appearance and explain the case, we cannot talk about a possible impeachment or actions against,” said the legislator. Vintimilla asked President Lenin Moreno that “because of how foreign policy is being handled, ask for his resignation.”
For the Chancellor this is a humanitarian issue that has sought to comply with the Ecuadorian Constitution, the Human Mobility Law, international law and international humanitarian law. He also rejected that this has been politicized. In this context and taking into account that Ecuador is a country that respects human rights, the Minister affirmed that “if he (Assange) requests to be nationalized, the law must be complied with. Regardless of whether we like it or not, Ecuador has to comply with human rights.
“Currently the country has set standards to maintain its support for Assange, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: “clear rules for him to fulfill his obligations as a person in asylum.” Despite having nationalization, the journalist of Australian origin will not lose his status as a protected person and the issue will continue to be discussed with the United Kingdom “in a private, prudent and confidential manner,” the Chancellor said.
