Ecuadornews:

The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry reiterated today that the Australian activist, Julian Assange, to whom Quito restricted access to communications this week, undertook “freely and voluntarily” not to intervene in internal affairs of other states.

Regarding the case of the founder of WikiLeaks, the Foreign Ministry reiterated in a statement that the Government of Ecuador acts “in the strictest adherence to the Constitution, laws and international law” and maintains “at all times its action in defense of the human rights and national interest “.

In this regard, he adds, the Government considers the unacceptable false statements that are being spread in an irresponsible manner by social networks that hide antecedents of this situation and that deny the existence of documents on Assange’s compromise by means of which he was forced to not to pronounce on internal matters of other States “

In this regard, the Government of Ecuador “categorically confirms” that Assange, “in keeping with the international protection maintained by Ecuador, undertook, freely and voluntarily, to ‘not interfere in the internal affairs of the States’, to respect the laws of the State that protects him and even states that he will defend ‘the interests of Ecuador as would the best of its citizens’, “the Foreign Ministry said in the letter.

In the statement, he also stressed that, beyond this commitment, all people regardless of their status, including those under international protection, “are obliged to respect the norms of international law that govern peaceful coexistence and relations of friendship and cooperation among the nations, citizens and civilized peoples of the world. ”

Among these, he noted, the duty to abstain from political activities in a foreign country, provided for in Article 38 of the American Declaration of Rights and Duties of Man.

In its letter, the Foreign Ministry recalled that the solution to this case will only be possible “if it is treated with the necessary seriousness and responsibility, at the same time through strict respect for international law and the due cooperation of all parties involved. ”

Last Wednesday, the Ecuadorian government restricted access to communications, as well as visits, to the Australian activist for “not being able to control himself” and comment on issues that Quito considers damaging its foreign policy.

And it is that Assange returned to demonstrate the last week on two political questions, one of Catalonia and the other the expulsion of Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of the Russian double spy Sergei Skripal.

The Australian activist remains under asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, considering the then Government of Rafael Correa that his life and physical integrity were in danger. (I)
