A showcase of sustainable projects in Guayaquil

Posted On 15 Aug 2018

Ecuadornews:

He traveled from Bolivia to show his proposal of cardboard furniture in Guayaquil. Jorge Borgoa Arnez, is one of the speakers who will be explaining for three days what his socio-environmental project consists of in the fifth edition of Green Latin Awards.

The contest that takes place in the port of Santa Ana exhibits the 500 best proposals that were registered in the ten categories: water, forests and flora, sustainable cities, human development, energy, wildlife, sustainable finance, solid waste management, oceans, and responsible production and consumption.

Burgoa’s project, Enkarte, is in the Human Development category and is based on reusing recycled materials to give it a new use. They started with cardboard and from there they build furniture, panels and even toys.

“I checked which of the materials was the most despised of the recyclables and the cardboard is one of the most rejected because they occupy a lot of volume and because in the recycling process a lot of energy, water and chemicals are spent. That’s why recycled paper still costs more than factory paper.” This project also offers social workshops to give low-income people an opportunity to start.

In the area of solid waste, Jéssica Guamán explains her Fertimilk project, a fertilizer that is made from organic waste from milk. “We know that in 10 liters of milk, 80% is dairy waste, and that waste has macroproteins that can improve the quality of the soil, create products like plastic …”.

The student from the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, based in Quito, explained that the product improves the organic quality of the soil and food. “We are benefiting the farmer and the consumer. We are in the process of generating clean energy through a biodigester. “

Within the Green Awards exhibition, there is an award contest in which ten finalist projects participate. Ecuador has two in the final, one about collecting used cooking oil, and the second is Galápagos Verde 2050.

On the latter, Patricia Jaramillo, leader of the project, explained: “We have a water shortage and we must think about food security. For this we use three water-saving technologies. ” And he gave as an example that, with one of the systems, 20 liters of water can last up to six months.

From Guatemala, Gabriel Fong’s project, on a treatment plant that uses a biodigester to degrade the organic matter present in the wastewater, is also one of the finalists of the Green Latin Awards contest, which became the showcase to show your proposal to municipalities and companies outside your country.

An App for recycling

Learn, classify and locate, are the basis of the tasks suggested by the Cycle to recycle application in Guayaquil. The proposal is an alliance between Puerto Limpio and Sambito, to offer environmental education.

The web application offers information about the 3 Rs (reduce, recycle and reuse), responsible consumption, global statistics. It shows the materials that can be recycled, how to separate them and store them temporarily and at what point of collection to take them. (I)
