Superintendent Toro stressed his commitment to strengthen freedom of expression

Posted On 24 Aug 2018

Ecuadornews:

As a historic meeting, the Superintendent of Communication (e), Édison Toro, called the meeting held on Thursday, August 23, with the Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Édison Lanza.

In this meeting, the head of the Supercom announced the work done by this Superintendency regarding the commitment to strengthen freedom of expression in the country and the protection of the rights of citizens and journalists.

“Allowing to work on issues of verification of rights to an international organization is to win, Ecuador has gained a lot with this visit, it is already an approach that positions us in the region, we are a country that respects the rights and allows this type to be done. It was difficult in the previous context to come to make a work visit to verify within its competences a special rapporteur of the Commission on freedom of expression in Ecuador, which marks a very important line of work, “said Superintendent Toro.

In addition, he emphasized that 1,188 processes were driven during the previous administration and that his work is accompanied by an audit, which previously requested the Comptroller General of the State, the same one that began on Tuesday 21 of this month.

For his part, the Rapporteur of the IACHR highlighted the initiative of Superintendent Toro to promote the rights to communication. He called his attention that he “is looking for a way to review and repair the inadequate situations of the past and that have notoriously affected the media disproportionately and participating in the law reform process, with a more vision of promoting human rights, that we only sanction abuses of freedom of expression, we are in the middle of the process, we are optimistic, it is important for democracy for the media, for journalists, “he said.

Also, the rapporteur of the IACHR informed that in the next few hours he will issue a report on the situation of freedom of expression in the country. This will contain preliminary conclusions and recommendations, aspects of institutional reforms, reparations, regulatory reforms and post-transition issues that aim to strengthen access to public information and protection for journalists.
