Wilman Terán, president of the Judiciary, was arrested.

In its X account, the Prosecutor’s Office wrote: “An arrest warrant is executed against Wilman T., president of the @CJudicatura, within the framework of an investigation for alleged organized crime. According to official information, after completing the search at the home of Wilman Terán, officials from the Prosecutor’s Office and Criminalistics Office Police collected evidence such as documents, computers, cell phones and more than USD 25,000 in cash, in 100 and 20 bills.

He also noted: “In another raid in the north of Quito, the arrest warrant for Pablo R., general in passive service of the Ecuador Police, investigated in this case.”
Until 05:00 this Thursday, December 14, 2023, 29 people – including judges, prosecutors, police, prison guides and others involved – have been detained in the operation carried out by Prosecutor’s Office and Police. It was also indicated that the more than 75 simultaneous raids have occurred in seven provinces and more than 900 people participate.
In Manabí, for example, two properties were raided, specifically, in Manta. In Pichincha, the same was done in Terán’s home and evidence such as cash was found. In this province, Pablo R., a general in passive service of the Police, was also arrested. The Judiciary facilities in Quito were also raided.
In Guayas the house of Adolfo G. was raided and two firearms, a cell phone and two electronic storage devices were seized. In that province, Ronald G., former Criminal Guarantees judge, was also raided. During the raids, Police Colonel Lenin Neicer was also arrested.
In Cotopaxi the offices of provincial judges Luis S. and Santiago Z. were raided.

In
Chimborazo raids were carried out on the investigation’s properties. And in Santo Domingo, the offices of Emerson C., of the Judicial Unit, were raided.
In Loja they raided the home of the Chief of the Judicial Police in that jurisdiction and the facilities of the Judicial Police.

Judicial Council speaks out

Through an official statement, from the Council of the Judiciary (CJ) a statement was shared regarding the arrest of the head of that entity, Wilman Terán. In the document they describe Terán’s arrest as “illegal and arbitrary” and reject what they consider to be of a “campaign of discredit and attack that has been carried out for several months against the judicial function.

The letter states that, from that institution, supports Terán and reiterates its confidence in the official detained early this Thursday, December 14, 2024.

In this regard, Fausto Murillo, member of the Judiciary Council, assured that “This is a statement from the president-vowel and does not represent me.” And he shared his position on X.
