Adelina Sotnikova, first Russian to win a gold medal in figure skating

Adelina Sotnikova is the first Russian woman to become Champion in figure skating during the Winter Olympics; surprising the current champion, Yuna Kim.

Sotnikova was not among the favorites. It was not even the number one in Russia, behind Julia Lipnitskaia.

The silver medal went for South Korean Kim, and the bronze for Carolina Kostner from Italy.

It was a deception for Kim, who was trying to become the first woman to revalidate the title since the German Katarina Witt in 1988.
