The Attorney General of the State, Juan Carlos Larrea, during his visit to the National Assembly, on January 25, 2024.

This May 23, the State Attorney General’s Office welcomed the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The attorney, Juan Carlos Larrea, highlighted the work of the Ecuadorian technical team, which has experience in this type of international litigation.

The international justice organization unanimously rejected the precautionary measures requested by the Government of Mexico regarding the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito, on April 5.

In a statement released on social networks, the Attorney General’s Office highlighted the defense of Ecuador’s position in the Court of The Hague together with the Foreign Ministry. According to the document, the guarantees given to the security of the Mexican Embassy personnel were sufficient for the Court.

Ecuador also guaranteed that it would provide full protection and security to the premises, assets and archives of the Mexican Embassy. Likewise, it would allow Mexico to remove all such properties from the premises and private residences of its diplomatic agents.

The Attorney General’s Office recalled that Ecuador also filed a claim against Mexico in the same Court. The Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador is accused of violating international asylum standards.

On April 5, Ecuadorian security forces entered the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorgle Glas. This caused the diplomatic crisis between both countries.
