Posted On 08 Feb 2011
On Tuesday, the second criminal division of the Provincial Court of Pichincha, granted the Habeas Corpus to the three Indigenous accused of sabotage and terrorism that were arrested on February 1.
Judge María Cristina Narváez said that the indigenous leaders’ rights were violated in the detention, so “we accept the petition for habeas corpus on their behalf and I request their immediate release.”
CONAIE’s leader, Marlon Santi, said that this resolution is a victory for the indigenous movement.
A small group of indigenous people that were standing outside of the court expressed their happiness for the decision of the judge.
