President Lenín Moreno presented at the Climate Change Conference of the United Nations Organization (COP25), which takes place in Spain, the actions that the country implements to protect the environment.

Deforestation rate in the country drops 48%
Moreno spoke to representatives and Heads of State from around 200 countries about the 2050 Decarbonization Plan that involves the Government, private sector and civil society.
He highlighted the 48.6% reduction in the rate of deforestation, which allowed Ecuador international recognition and the award of $ 31 million for the achievement. He stressed the will of the Government to strengthen the 59 protected areas, which correspond to 14% of the territory.
“We want our Amazon brothers to have sustainable tools and businesses, for a dignified life, without harming nature.” He also said that the expansion of the protected area of the Galapagos Islands is analyzed.
“We will take care of the heritage for the benefit of humanity, the local population and its biodiversity,” he said.
For these conservation efforts, the archipelago achieved the Sustainable Destination of the Americas award. Moreno referred to the dialogue he initiated in the country to focus fuel subsidies, as a measure to reduce pollution and carbon emission.
The President said that a decision will be taken without affecting the most needy sectors.
“In addition to these fuels polluting, subsidies favor smuggling and drug trafficking,” he said.
José Domínguez, Secretary of Energy of Spain, said that the Ecuadorian Government has made important decisions in the fight against global warming, which should be recognized and grateful worldwide.
Within the framework of this summit that ends on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, the President met with King Felipe VI of Spain at the Royal Palace before a reception offered, together with Queen Letizia to the heads of State and Government World conference attendees.
He also held a meeting with Spanish President Pedro Sánchez, who expressed concern about “the attempt to destabilize the country and offered its support.”
The COP25 meeting hopes to reach the commitment so that the nations involved reach the goal of carbon emissions neutrality by 2050.
