Driver of burnt bus in Colombia is delivered to Authorities
The driver of the bus that caught in fire in the Colombian town of Fundación (north) and killed 31 children leaving 25 wounded, was arrested this monday and gave his version of events, said the Local Police .
“He is temporarily arrested while his responsibility is determined, ” said a local official, adding the possibility that the accident was caused by pouring gasoline from a contraband fuel container.
The police said the driver surrended when the hypothesis of him being guilty was made public and the affected relatives of the victims came to bis home and called the authorities.
“I am moved and the whole country is in mourning for the death of these children in the tragedy . We will always remember those children”, said the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos after moving to Fundación, in the department of Magdalena.
The investigation
There is another hypothesis that states there was a damage in the vehicle, and that the bus didn’t have the mechanical technical review provided for circulation in Colombia .
From this monday the bodies are expected to be identified by forensic authorities, something difficult for the calcination state of the bodies. The state will be responsible for the hospital costs of the wounded and the funerals cost, explained Santos .
A child survivor said that the driver “got off the bus to get fuel, me and all the children were in the upper part. The bus just started to spark, then the driver ran to get water and then left.”
“I broke the window and took my sister but I could not save my two brothers “, said the 11 years old survivor .
The injured suffered burns of second or third degree, and many are in ‘critical’ condition in hospitals of the region.
