Since the departure of Ivonne Baki, Ecuador has been without an ambassador to the United States for three months. Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld assured that as soon as the approval of the North American country is obtained, the name of the diplomat will be announced.

The Chancellor of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, in a meeting on May 20, 2024.
The appointment of Ecuador’s new ambassador to the United States is one of the pending tasks of Daniel Noboa, who has appointed 19 diplomats in six months of government.
After Ivonne Baki‘s duties as Ecuador’s ambassador to the North American country concluded, lawyer Soledad Peña, 30, remained in charge until the new representative is named.
The government intended to appoint Peña to that position, but he did not meet the age requirement.
After 90 days without Ecuador having an ambassador in the United States, the government of Daniel Noboa already has a name for that position. This was confirmed by Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld in an interview with El Universo, without revealing the name.
Sommerfeld assured the media that the new ambassador will be a career diplomat and that Ecuador has already requested the United States’ approval for his appointment.
The name of the new ambassador will be made public when that response is available.
The chancellor pointed out that this is the first time that the government of Daniel Noboa requests the approval of the United States to appoint an ambassador.
He assured that approval was never requested for Soledad Peña, who remained as chargé d’affaires.
