Ecuador Moves the Highest Percentage of GDP on Military Spending

Under the South American Defense Council, Union of South American Nations (UNASUR for its Spanish acronym) released the so-called South American Registry of defense expenditure.
The document revealed that Ecuador is the country of the region that spends the largest percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to military spending: 2.74% in 2010.
At the meeting held yesterday in Quito, UNASUR identified four main objects of Defense spending, in order of investment, are the following:
1. Military personnel
2. Resources for operations and maintenance
3. Armament and infrastructure
4. Research
