The President of the European nation will be awarded by the Head of State, Lenin Moreno. Part of his agenda includes a visit to Galapagos.
Ecuador and Germany will “deepen bilateral relations and friendship ties” during the official visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who will arrive in Quito next Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said. “The meeting will highlight the excellent state of bilateral relations, mainly in the political, economic and commercial spheres,” according to a statement from the Ministry.
Steinmeier will attend the laying of a wreath to the heroes of independence and then meet privately with the President of the Republic, Lenin Moreno. The Head of State, for his part, will impose on the German president the National Order of Merit in the Grand Collar degree, in honor of the German geographer, astronomer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. “In the meeting, both leaders will review the regional situation, particularly the political crisis that currently exists in Venezuela, as well as Ecuador’s relations with the European Union (EU),” the official note states.
The visit of the German President also coincides with the commemoration for the 250th anniversary of Humboldt’s birth. “The visit constitutes, for Ecuador, an opportunity to join the commemoration events for the 250th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding German scientist Alexander Von Humboldt, who visited the territories of the then Royal Audience of Quito more than 200 years ago,” recalled the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the statement, that visit by the German geographer included “the current Ecuador, where he remained for about eight months, carrying out different geographical, astronomical and botanical studies that constitute notable contributions to universal science,” he explained.
This will be the second time that a German president has visited Ecuador, since the reunification of Germany in 1990. The first time was in 1993, when then-President Richard Freiherr von Weizsäcker visited the country, the ministry said. It will also be the first occasion in which a German President visits the Galapagos Islands, which are located about a thousand kilometers from the Ecuadorian continental coasts. (I)
