Ecuador takes the first steps to implement 5G technology
With the bidding announcement for the 3.5 gigahertz band next year 2020, the process of implementing the 5G technology in the country begins.
The Minister of Telecommunications (Mintel) will convene in November the bidding offers for the 700 megahertz (MHz) and 2.5 gigahertz (GHz) band spectrum. In August 2020, it will do the same for the 3.5 GHz band.
This is the first step for the fifth generation technology known as 5G to work in Ecuador. The Inter-American Development Bank accompanies the Mintel in determining the mechanisms for spectrum allocation. The telephone company Claro has already announced its interest in buying these frequencies.
This Tuesday, Daniel Hajj, general director of América Móvil, met with the president of the Republic, Lenín Moreno, in Carondelet, and announced his commitment to invest $ 500 million in new technologies, networks and coverage in the next three years in Ecuador.
Hajj said that this year 2019 5G tests will be conducted in Quito and Guayaquil.
The other two operators in the market, Telefónica Movistar and the National Telecommunications Corporation (CNT), have also expressed interest in implementing this technology in the country and are working with Mintel to develop a new regulatory framework that allows them to access more spectrum.
