Ecuador will allow the entry of Venezuelans who have a visa to other countries

Posted On 12 Sep 2019

Venezuelan migrants who have a visa for third countries will be able to enter Ecuadorian territory, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, José Valencia.

The official said that, with this transit permit, foreigners can stay for ten days in Ecuador.

Five of the 18 windows that were enabled in Migración Rumichaca before the effective date of Decree 826, which requests a visa from Venezuelan citizens since August 26, operated normally yesterday.

Until this border migratory dependency, there was still no provision, until Wednesday night, any provision on the passage to Venezuelan migrants who have visas for third countries, as Minister Valencia announced.

On the Rumichaca international bridge, several families were waiting for the humanitarian corridor to be activated. The movement was similar to that of the last days and no agglutinations were registered until 20:30 today. It is expected that tomorrow Thursday the flow of migrants will increase in that dependence to try to enter Ecuador.

With the transit permit, 50 percent of the more than one thousand foreigners who are stuck in the border city of Ipiales is expected to enter Ecuadorian soil.

However, not all Venezuelan migrants have such a document and require that the humanitarian corridor make exceptions with infants, people with disabilities and the elderly.

Mauri González, a native of Barquisimeto, said that many of his countrymen carry only the card to try to enter Ecuador.

Danny Vásquez, zonal coordinator 1 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mobility, said that the cases of infants seeking to meet their parents are being treated.

The six shelters that operate in Ipiales have exceeded the established quota and do not supply. The situation was complicated due to the problems of lack of water suffered by that border city.

The Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, is expected to visit Tulcán today to do some activities with local mayors. A statement on the issue and the controls that will be activated for the humanitarian corridor to be fulfilled is expected.

Romo said two days ago that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility is the one that regulates the issue, but that if the corridor was implemented, it would only be for people who have a visa to other countries, “since Peru is currently requesting a visa, then we are coordinating with the other countries to review that possibility. ”

Since last August 26, Ecuador has asked Venezuelans for a visa, but before they entered only with the ID card.

This measure provoked protests by Venezuelans at the foot of the international Rumichaca bridge. Some migrants tried to enter through dangerous border crossings.
