Ecuador will not need to import maize in 2014
Posted On 20 Jun 2013
Carol Chehab, Marketing Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (Magap for its Spanish acronym) announced that Ecuador will be self-sufficient in terms of maize during 2014, regardless of the possibility of importing.
This achievement would be possible because grain production this year would reach one million metric tons (MT), becoming a record achieved by the agricultural sector.
Luis Valverde, deputy minister said that this has been achieved through planning and strict control of the marketing chain.
