Human rights calls for precautionary measures on evictions
The representative of the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CHR) in Ecuador, Billy Navarrete, filed with the Inter-American Court on Human Rights (IACHR) a request for precautionary measures against the State, because of the evictions in the areas of Las Marias and Los Tres Hermanos, on Monte Sinai, northwest of Guayaquil.
Navarrete says the measure seeks to prevent more than two hundred families living in extreme poverty, to be deprived of their existing homes. However, the governor of Guayas, Viviana Bonilla, reiterated that evictions will continue since the Government have declared zero tolerance to invasions.
The next eviction is still pending in the cooperative Los Tres Hermanos. On last Friday June 7, the Commissioner of Police, Robinson Arias, delivered notices to about 120 people who built their homes after the signing of the Executive Decree 607 of December 28, 2010.
The document sets an eight-day deadline to abandon the houses. Los Tres Hermanos is close to the cooperative Las Marias, where on Tuesday June 18, a peaceful eviction was carried out to 93 families.
